Freight Cost Control Checklist

Freight cost is not a rate problem.

Most freight savings programmes go straight to the rate card, because the rate is the number everyone can see. But the rate is the last thing that happens to a shipment. By the time anyone is negotiating, the cost has already been set — by how the order was placed, how the goods were packed, what was promised to the customer, and what was agreed in the terms of sale.

This checklist works backwards from the invoice to the decisions that created it. It surfaces where cost is being made outside your line of sight — before it shows up as a surcharge, an expedite, or a margin you can't explain.

How to use this

Run it one freight programme at a time — a business unit, a region, or a group of lanes. Name it below, then tick only the items you can stand behind with confidence. Your score updates live at the bottom.

It applies whatever you move: containers, pallets, parcels or temperature-controlled loads — inbound or outbound, in-house or outsourced. Any item you can't tick isn't a gap in the checklist. It's a gap in the control.

Your Control Score

Tick the items you can confidently stand behind — out of 28.

0 / 28 ticked
Start ticking Your reading appears here as you work through the list.
25–28
In control. You know what your freight costs and why. What's left is in design, not discipline.
19–24
Mostly visible. The basics hold, but cost is still being created in places you can't see it happen.
13–18
Rate-led. You're managing the price of freight rather than the cost of it. Savings tend to reappear as surcharges.
Below 13
Start with visibility. Before anything else: establish what you're spending, on what, and who decided it.

When the gaps turn out to be real

Meyerize is a logistics and supply chain consultancy built to operate inside the complexity of Southeast Asia — not above it. Where these gaps are real, we work alongside your team to establish what freight is actually costing you and why, build the capability to hold the gains, execute the change, and track the result.
